Especially for Incoming 6th Graders

This email will address the following three questions:
What time does school begin and end?
What should I do if my child is absent?
Can my child carry his or her backpack to class with them?

School Day
The school day extends from 7:55 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. Students may enter the building at 7:30 a.m. All students must be in class by 7:50 a.m. Students will be dismissed at 2:40 p.m.

Attendance
Regular attendance is essential for good schoolwork. Every effort is made to keep a careful check on the attendance of each student.  Parents are asked to call the attendance secretary by 8:00 a.m. each day the child is ill. The attendance secretary will try to contact a parent or guardian to inquire about questionable absences. Parents need to send a written statement of their child’s absence to the attendance secretary the day the child returns to school.

Coats and Book Bags
Students will be assigned a locker. Each locker has a combination lock on it. Students will place their book bags (rolling backpacks are not acceptable due to the crowdedness of the halls) and coats in their lockers when they arrive at school. Remember that students must not give their combination to anyone, not even to their best friend.
Book bags are not permitted in the classrooms as they are hazardous. They cannot fit under the desk and if they are placed in the aisles when a teacher or student walks down the aisle they can easily stumble over the book bag. Therefore, students must take the necessary materials with them to class for at least 3 periods. This allows students to have the needed materials for classes without returning to their lockers between every class. Students can organize themselves appropriately and they will only need to go to their locker 3 times a day. morning, lunch and after school.
