Superintendent Starr Holding First Book Club Event, 11/29/11

Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Joshua P. Starr is holding his first Book Club event on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 and the community can participate in a variety of ways. This is the first of three book club events planned for the 2011-2012 school year.

The book clubs are one of the ways Dr. Starr, who began his tenure on July 1, is meeting and engaging the community, staff and students of MCPS. Since early September, the superintendent has also been holding Listen and Learn events with staff and the community at schools around Montgomery County. He also has held two Student Town Hall meetings and has visited many schools to observe teaching and learning.

“The book clubs will provide a less formal way for us to have a conversation about education and will provide an opportunity for me to share some of my educational philosophy,” Dr. Starr said. “I’m looking forward to a great conversation.”

Dr. Starr has chosen “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success” by Dr. Carol S. Dweck as the first book. Dr. Dweck (via Skype) will participate in the first hour of the Nov. 29 event as part of a panel discussion. There will also be audience questions and comments.

The discussion will be held in the MCPS TV studio at the Carver Educational Services Center, 850 Hungerford Dr. in Rockville, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  Individuals who would like to be in the live studio audience are encouraged to RSVP by emailing pio@mcpsmd.org. (Please note: Space is limited, so please RSVP as soon as you are able.)

Viewers at home who wish to participate will be able to watch online or on TV and then join the discussion via email and Twitter. The program will be shown live on the Superintendent’s Book Club website and on MCPS TV (Comcast channel 34).

The other two book clubs are scheduled for Jan. 31, 2012, and April 24, 2012.

Northwest Athletics is hosting a FREE College Recruiting Seminar on Wed. Nov. 30th at 7:00pm in the auditorium. This event is open to the public. We hope that people from other MCPS schools will attend.

Rick Wire from Dynamite Sports will be making a presentation that covers the recruiting process from A to Z. He has a web page www.DynamiteSports.com which is very informative. He also has reference materials available at low cost.

This seminar will help our parents to become more knowledgeable and REALISTIC about athletic scholarships and the recruiting process.  I am also encouraging middle school families to attend so they can learn that NOW is the time to prepare for playing sports in college.

This event will teach our parents and athletes how to find the right college and where to look for financial aid/scholarships

Thanks,
Jim Tapley, Athletic Director

SSL Opportunity ‘Great Potato Drop’ – Volunteer

Posted by:      “Matathi@aol.com”            Matathi@aol.com                                       matathiasa

      Mon Nov 14, 2011 11:37 am        (PST)

The Great Potato Drop needs volunteer help for this upcoming event – Saturday, December 17, 2011Time:   8am to 4pm – whole day or just a few hours
Shifts: 8am – 10pm, 10pm – 1pm, 1pm – 4pm

Note: We will need many hands for the first shift to unload and re-bag the potatoes.
Please indicate what time frame you can help when you rsvp to volunteer (see email below).
We will have SSL forms for you after your shift is over.

Location: Christ Church Parish Kensington parking lot located at 4001 Franklin St, Kensington, Md 20895 (parking lot entrance is on Everett St and Connecticut Ave).

Volunteer duties:
-   Unloading 40,000 pounds of potatoes (in 50 pound bags)
-   creating smaller 10 and 20 pound mesh bags (tie the ends of cut mesh)
-  re-bagging the potatoes
- loading potato bags into area food bank/soup kitchen trucks

Volunteers must be 14 or older, volunteers age 11-13 must be accompanied by a parent or adult.
Volunteering to make the 10 and 20 pound mesh bags will be done before the potato drop by 12/12/11.

The Great Potato Drop is a project designed to help the homeless and hungry.
Food manufacturers, such as potato chip companies, often dispose of thousands of pounds of food due to slight blemishes.  This project wishes to both educate our communities on this wasteful practice as well as provide for the needs of others.  We will unload, re package and load the potatoes into trucks to be distributed to area food pantries and soup kitchens.

Please email Christiane Robbins and Elizabeth Lakey at PotatoDrop@gmail.com if you would like to volunteer (please give the time that you are available to work and how many in your group). Please email if you have any questions.

Thank you for your support!
